As you navigate this etheric environment alongside the Power Animal that greets you, you’ll nurture and strengthen the special Spirit Medicine that’s bound to your soul.
This is the first of many steps on a long journey of self-exploration and soul evolution. Should you wish to continue on this path, you’ll learn how to move around the Incan Shamanic Medicine Wheel. On this sacred, spiraling journey, your personal totem animal will serve as your guide, protector, and companion.
Ancient Traditions & Dynamic Soul Work
Power animals have been used as guides and companions for centuries by indigenous healers, native medicine people, wisdom keepers, and the talented shaman. The sacred connection that’s developed between an individual and their power animal is unique and personal. Many people who have worked with a Shaman or an indigenous healer have received their power animals as gifts. Receiving a power animal as a gift can signal a rite of passage that leads to a deep level of spiritual development.
A personal power animal delivers a dynamic medicine and can be used in several different ways. You may request that your power animal give you guidance, answer difficult life-questions, assist you in personal healing, or amplify spiritual growth. Power animals can help you through periods of mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual trauma and can assist you in a myriad of undesirable situations. In some cases, people claim that their power animal has come to save them from dangerous circumstances or accidents.
Invisible Realms of Consciousness & Interdimensional Journeys
Where do power animals come from? Why does one person receive a bear, another person a wolf, while someone else is gifted a jaguar? Why are power animals so closely associated with the shaman, native tribes, and indigenous healers? How do people receive their power animals and where do they come from?
The Spirits of Power Animals live in the “Underworld” or in the sub-conscious realms. A shaman travels to multiple dimensions, such as the Underworld/subconscious, Middle World/conscious, or Upper World/ higher conscious. These dreamlike worlds house the mystery and magic of time travel and offer portals to different dimensions.
Traveling through and working in these realms allows the Shaman to find and retrieve lost soul pieces, access past and future lives, call on spirit guides and angelic beings, and review the Akashic records. Personal Power Animals are also accessed in these astral surroundings. A dedicated journey through these realms might reveal the secrets to our most pressing questions. The accompaniment of a power animal is a crucial tool that can allow us to access the unseen and can also protect us on this precarious expedition.
Working with Shadows and Light
Power animals emerge from the sub-conscious realms known as the “Underworld.” This is because the sub-conscious reflects our duality—the dark and light facets of our soul and incarnate personality. Strengths and weaknesses are also revealed in these hidden dimensions.
A power animal will shine light on the strengths we’ve not yet consciously discovered within ourselves. It’ll guide us to tap into our unknown wisdom. Power animals also give us keen insight and clues to issues buried deep within us. Some of our greatest healing resources lie in the sub-conscious realms.
An Example of a Gentle Guide
We often stay stuck in our shadows because we lack the guidance to fully understand how unique, divine, and empowered we really are. If, for example, a deer appears as your power animal, it may show you how to nurture yourself and be gentle with yourself and others as you walk your life’s path. Such a mild creature may also point out that you need to work on personal boundaries and be cautious about putting the concerns of others before your own healing.
From communing with a sacred dear, you may learn that you need to create healthy boundaries in order to pull yourself out of the roles of savior or victim. This knowledge can lead to a healing experience and enrich your life. A deer may also encourage you to gain confidence in your intuition. If you’ve been second- guessing yourself, a deer may bring its medicine of unconditional love to heal your doubts and allow you to embrace your intuitive abilities.
Traveling to the Underworld
On this first foray into this hidden realm, we’ll travel together. With expert guidance, you’ll visit the Underworld, and you’ll be able to discover and unite with your power animal. There’s no reason to fear the Underworld. Many people think of the Underworld as a type of purgatory or a dark and dangerous place full of lurking shadows and nasty demons. While there are places in the Underworld where such creatures exist, the shaman approaches these areas with respect and caution, knowing how to use these challenging encounters as healing opportunities.
A journey to the Underworld is extremely powerful because it’s also the dimension where lost soul pieces can be found. This is called a “soul retrieval,” and it can have powerful affects across all dimensions. Travelling through the Underworld can enable us to view past lives and heal ancient wounds. By delving into the Underworld, we’re given the opportunity to break old contracts that no longer serve us.
The shaman determines what needs to be accessed in the Underworld. They serve as a qualified guide who knows how to navigate this kind of astral environment. Our conscious minds cannot truly heal without becoming fully aware of the issues hiding in the shadows. By visiting the Underworld, we can bring soul injuries to light and gain the healing wisdom we need to step into the future with confidence and skill.
A Personal Reflection
Everyone’s journey to the Underworld is unique and telling. I’ll never forget my first journey there. The ground was cracked, dry and barren, and the tress and were burnt. The sky, a hazy, dull orange. This arid scenery was reflecting the lack of healing in my spirit and revealing the wounds in my subconscious.
My power animal, the lioness, was emaciated and scrawny. Her hair was mangy, and she limped along with her head hung low. She lacked strength and passion for life. In fact, I could not meet her eyes as she shuffled past me. Her hips were boney hangers holding the scraggly strands of her sagging, mangy fur.
As I continued my personal healing journey, the lioness became muscular and strong. Her fur turned a healthy, golden-brown, and her amber eyes became fierce. Her expression became compassionate and wise. The dry, cracked earth, burnt trees, and hazy orange sky transformed into a scene of lush, bountiful gardens bursting with vibrant colors of reds, yellows, and purples. Blue skies appeared overhead alive with hummingbirds and butterflies.
The Underworld is a powerful reflection of our sub-conscious. It can reveal many stories that affect us in the Middle World of everyday life. The scenes and characters we visit in that dimension can serve as excellent navigation tools and can reveal what needs to be healed.
Choosing a Portal of Entry
In order to get started on our journey, we need to access some kind of symbolic portal. The image you choose will allow you to begin your travels and cross into the hidden dimension of the Underworld. This is a simple visualization process that relies on your imagination and some real-world experience. Think of a place in the Middle World, our earthly space, that serves as a hole, doorway, or opening of some sort.
Some people think of things like bathtubs or showers where a vortex of spiraling water can be seen as it washes down the drain. Others may imagine a cave or natural space that they’ve visited in the past. Some people actually visualize such things as gopher holes that appear in their yard. Any kind of opening will serve as a good focus point. Once you have it in mind, our journey can begin.
